What is Co-Dependency?

Codependency is defined as: An extreme dependency by one person on another who is suffering from an addiction. Common characteristics include low self-esteem coupled with a high need for approval. Not a formal psychiatric diagnosis, codependency is a psychological syndrome often noted in relatives or partners of alcoholics or substance abusers but can be any unhealthy relationship where you put the needs of others before yourself to the detriment of yourself.

Codependency can feel like a disease, however it is not a disease. It is a learned emotional and behavioral condition which affects the ability to have a healthy relationship with others. The good news is that you can change your condition, choose your behavior, and feel your emotions without letting them run your life!
